The Dutch Emigrant Artillery was formed in Hanover in 1795 from remnants of Franco-Dutch units. It consisted of three companies and between 1796 and 1803 served in the West Indies to man guns in forts there. In 1803 it was amalgamated into the Royal Foreign Artillery. After Britain's allies all signed treaties with France, Britain also signed the Treaty of Amiens, under which Britain restored many captured territories to France and its allies. The "peace" proved merely to be an interlude, with plotting and preparations for a renewal of war continuing on both sides. When the 79th Cameron Highlanders were raised it was decided to use a new design instead of the red-based Cameron tartan ( Wikipedia: Queen’s Own Cameron Highlanders). The Cameron of Erracht tartan was based on the Macdonald sett with the addition of a yellow line from the Cameron tartan, and the omission of three red lines found in that of Macdonald.

The British artillery of the Napoleonic Wars was well trained, efficient and motivated. Their officers were very much educated professionals. They did not, could not, buy their commissions or promotions. However, the effects of all this excellent training were often negated by the small size of the artillery corps and the fact that promotion was by seniority rather than by merit. Each regiment and corps of the British Army has an allotted facing colour according to Part 14 Section 2 Annex F of the British Army dress regulations. Where full dress is currently not used, the notional colours can be ascertained by the colours of the mess dress; if the regiment in question has not been amalgamated with another.
